INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis Colts safety Mike Doss is expected to miss at least three weeks with a pulled hamstring.

Doss pulled up lame during a punt return early in Thursday night's 27-24 season-opening loss at New England. He was taken from the sideline to the locker room on a golf cart.
Coach Tony Dungy confirmed Friday that Doss could miss several weeks.

"It looks like it will be a while, probably at least three weeks," Dungy said. "We've got some guys on the roster who can play and will play."

Backup Anthony Floyd replaced Doss for most of Thursday's game, but the Colts are thin in the secondary where injuries have hit hard. Without Doss, the Colts have just three other safeties on the active roster - Floyd, Idrees Bashir and Cory Bird, who was inactive Thursday after suffering a concussion in the final preseason game.

Indianapolis' top draft choice, second-round pick Bob Sanders, is a safety but has not yet practiced and is unlikely to be ready before the Tennessee game Sept. 19.

"I don't know if we're able to speed Sanders along," Dungy said. "I believe he's not ready to play yet."

That could force Dungy to make a position switch - moving cornerback Donald Strickland back to safety where he started eight games last season.

Doss is a big loss. I wish Sanders was a bit more groomed. He may have to suck it up and play, but as a rookie, he cannot make up for Doss.
